In short
- Steam's own store has free-to-play games and, from time to time, limited-time free giveaways; none of them need a code, you get them directly on Steam.
- The real way to get a paid game without paying: complete tasks paid for by advertisers and convert the GG you collect into a Steam Wallet code or a random key.
- "Free Steam key" sites, gift card "generators" and "free game" links on Discord are the phishing and scam patterns Valve warns about; only enter your Steam password on official Steam domains.
There are three ways to get free Steam games: install the free-to-play titles in the Steam store, add the limited-time giveaways publishers occasionally run to your library, and complete tasks in a rewards app to exchange the points for a Steam Wallet code or random key; in GiftGame the points accumulate as GG. "Free Steam key" sites give no games; most are fake login pages built to steal accounts.
Route 1: Steam's own free games
The "Free to Play" category of the Steam store lists games that cost nothing to install. They are permanently free and make their money from in-game purchases. No code, key or third-party site is involved: you log in to your Steam account, press "Play" on the game's page and it is added to your library. Steam also offers demos and, on certain weekends, free trial periods, and these too are only available from the store's own pages.
Route 2: limited-time giveaways
Publishers sometimes make a paid game free for a limited period. Such a giveaway only appears in the Steam store, on the game's own page: if you add it to your library before the deadline, the game stays yours. The honest way to follow these is the store's front page and the game's page, not an outside site that says "we are giving away free game keys, log in here".
Route 3: do tasks, collect GG, convert to a Steam code
If you want a paid game without paying, someone else has to pay for it, and in rewards apps that someone is an advertiser: a game studio pays to win new players, a research company pays for survey answers; you complete the task and the app passes your share on as points. In GiftGame:
- Install the app and create an account.
- Choose from game tasks on the offerwalls, market research surveys in the survey section, mini games, the wheel or the daily reward.
- Meet the task's condition; once the partner reports it, the GG is credited to your balance.
- Pick the Steam Wallet code or Steam random key reward from the catalog; the GG is deducted and your request goes for approval.
- After approval the code arrives as a message in your in-app inbox; in your web account it opens with "Show code".
How tasks work is explained in earning game codes by completing tasks, and every way to earn is in how to earn GG.
Wallet code or random key?
| Steam Wallet code | Steam random key | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Balance in your Steam Wallet; you choose the game or item yourself | A product key for a game that is not revealed in advance |
| Where to redeem | Steam's "Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code" page or the wallet menu in the desktop app | "Activate a Product on Steam" under "Add a Game" in the Steam client, or the key registration page in the browser |
| Watch out | Steam says you must be logged in; the amount is converted to your wallet currency | The game you get cannot be swapped; an "already in use" error means the key is registered to another account |
| Best for | Someone aiming at a specific game | Someone who wants a surprise game |
Step-by-step redemption and error fixes are in how to redeem a Steam Wallet code and what a Steam random key is and how to use it. A wallet code's currency and region must match your account; check the region on the product page before you choose.
Why "free" but not "instant"
Tasks take time, surveys need a matching profile and not every task is open to everyone; partner reports range from minutes to days. If a site promises you "a Steam key in a minute", check the warning signs in how to choose a trustworthy rewards app. For messages asking for your code or account there is the safety guide, for other questions the FAQ, and codes for other games are covered in how to get free game codes.

Frequently asked questions
Are there really free games on Steam?
Yes. The games in the Steam store's Free to Play category are permanently free and install directly from Steam; publishers also occasionally make a paid game free for a limited time.
Can I trust sites that give away free Steam keys?
No. Those sites either set survey traps or show a fake login page that steals your Steam account. Valve says to enter your password only on official Steam domains.
How do I get a paid Steam game without paying?
By completing tasks and surveys paid for by advertisers and converting the points into a Steam Wallet code or a random key. In GiftGame those points accumulate as GG; after approval the code arrives in your inbox.
What is the difference between a Steam Wallet code and a random key?
A wallet code adds balance to your Steam Wallet and you choose the game; a random key is a product key for a game that is not revealed until you activate it.
How long does it take to get the code?
Partners report tasks within minutes to days; after your reward request is approved the code arrives in your in-app inbox and in your web account.
